Artist Spotlight: Caves
Music

The problem with music today is that no one dances! Thank the gods childhood friends united.... to save the boring indie rock show! Brian Morris (drums) and Jacob Carey (vocals, guitar) convinced transcontinental friends David Benedetti (guitar) and Tim West (bass) to start what would become Caves. Caves found itself in the open arms of a growing and welcoming public, as well as embraced by the typically icy press. Will you open your arms to these ambitious young scrapers? Just remember to always let your conscience (and your ears) be your guide.

At the end of 2006, the quartet began to realize a shift in their musical philosophy. Wanting to move forward from their shoegazer roots, Caves began to pay close attention to the rhythmic legs of their musical experience. They became more Clash than Cure, more Smiths than Slowdive, more Pink Flag than Pink Floyd. Drawing from Brian's long-time love for reggae and hip-hop, the band began placing more weight on rhythms and counterpoints. The wall of sound they had previously built was being attacked by a barage of eigth and sixteenth notes. Taking hints from the art school approach of bands like Wire and Gang of Four, David and Jake’s guitars became much more specialized and intentional. Thus began the process of creating "Get On With It"- Caves' first long player.

Froman: Which of your songs would make for a good porn soundtrack?

Caves: Definitely Closure and Curiosity. Maybe You+Me if it is one of those artsy heartfelt flicks.

Froman: Is it true for the guitarist if the audience can’t see your c*ck it isn't rock?

Caves: Guitar players see their "ax" as an extension of their most intimate parts. Where else can you play with yourself in front of people and not get arrested? Its genius.

Froman: If you could add one member from any band who would it be?

Caves: Bruce Springsteen. Mostly for stage presence. I wouldn't give him a mic or anything stupid like that.

Froman: Drum solos...only good for other drummers or audience pleasing?

Caves: Drum solos are a good way for drummers to get exercise when they are not in their cages.

Froman: Record companies. Need them or want them?

Caves: I want them to want me, I need them to need me, I'm begging them to beg me...

Froman: Do you all have equal say in songwriting?

Caves: The band can say anything they want. I don't listen to them most of the time.

Froman: Strangest thing you've snorted?

Caves: Well there was that three day coke bender with Farley. God knows what was in that shit...

Froman: Is there anyone in the band that you have to dress b/c he’s embarrassing?

Caves: Most of the time we are trying to get people undressed so we don't have very much time to think about dressing.

Froman: What band/artist would you like to beat up?

Caves: Miley Cyrus while her dad watches jealously, feeling some joy because his daughter is far more famous than he could ever be.

Froman: Ever play a concert where you were almost too fucked up to go on stage?

Caves: We have played many shows where we are too fucked up to be on stage. Sad thing is, the kids like us better when we are too fucked up. What do you suppose that says about us?

Froman: What's the creepiest venue you've ever played? Ever fear for your life on stage?

Caves: Caves really is the one bringing the creep to the venue. It is mostly the Swazye Eyes and bad breath that creep people out. Secondly I mostly fear for my life when I get off stage. Ya know, swarming fans, girls in sweaters, guys in g-strings, the usual real life fears we deal with each day.

Froman: Describe your sex: light some candles or lay down the tarp?

Caves: I like to use a camping analogy. Its a lot like camping where you are required to both light candles and lay down a tarp. And, it is inevitable that someone is going to get wet. Boyscouts taught me that.

Froman: Who gets the most groupies? Or at least give us a best groupie story?

Caves: One time I saw this girl from the stage and she was smiling and I got really excited and talked to her after the show and I asked if she wanted a drink and she said no.

Froman: Aquanet or paul mitchell?

Caves: Depends on the climate. Miami -Aquanet, New York- Paul Mitchell. Pacific Northwest-Nothing. No one gives a shit about that up here.

Froman: What’s the most ridiculous thing you’ve seen requested for backstage (aside from 1000 brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass)?

Caves: Sometimes I ask the other bands if we can go backstage, to you know pick up our gear and things, most of the time they say no.

Froman: A 17 yr old gorgeous little groupie comes in thru the bathroom window…play ball?

Caves: I refuse to play any competitive sports with someone better than me. I don't like losing. Especially to someone in the prime of their high school career.

Froman: Any spinal tap moments?

Caves: I wake up every day and pray for the day we be become anywhere near as cool as Spinal Tap.

Froman: The day your band dies, what would u like its epitaph to read?

Caves: And in the streets the children screamed
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken
And the three men I admire most
The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died
And they were singin'
