What do you get when you put a bunch of gay russian sailors in the same room. Two things....a typical saturday night at my apartment, and the worst cover of Let It Be you'll ever hear. They must really be starving for entertainment out in Russia. Get some boy bands or something.
Even if you've never heard of Sick Puppies, chances are you've seen their Free Hugs video, which now tops over 50MM views. This shot the band to instant fame with all sorts of exposure from Late Night shows to Oprah. But now the band is letting its music do the talking, and its latest single "You're Going Down" has started to blow up.
The indie rock band from Sydney, Australia was formed by singer/lead guitarist Shimon Moore and bassist Emma Anzai in the music room of Mosman High School in 1997, where the two connected because of their shared love for Silverchair. Initially with Shimon on drums and Emma on guitars, the duo would meet up to rock out some Green Day and Rage Against the Machine songs and eventually felt compelled to write their own songs. Soon Chris Mileski was added to the band to fill in on drums.
Their new album Tri-Polar marks the band's second album in the States. Nothing ground breaking, but if you like hard-rocking, mainstream-friendly bands like Shinedown (who they're currently touring with), you'll enjoy Sick Puppies. MySpace here.
Sure, I'll say it. I'm a big Depeche fan. I'm cool with all that 80s new wave stuff-- joy division, the cure, whatever. You know that scene in American Pyscho when they're at the nightclub dancing and blowing their faces off while the New Order record spins? I don't think it gets better than that. And more often than not, these guys-especially Depeche- put out good videos...take Personal Jesus. But nothing's working for me in this one from the Sounds of the Universe era. Well, at least they made good videos when people actually watched em.
But he respects them as a label competing with others. Here he only, as he puts it showed the truth about the New York-based label founded by Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin, which is now a unit of Universal Music Group.
Here's the Blastmaster to XXL Magazine:
"Def Jam is the dopest label in hip-hop, in the culture of hip-hop. There really would be no hip-hop as we know it today if it wasn't for Def Jam. But you don't get that respect without also being the label that single-handedly destroyed hip-hop...Every time you think of what's wrong with hip-hop, the lyrics, the commercialized music, one artist being played on the radio all day, things like that, that's all Def Jam...We respect it. It's a respect cause we all competing, so Def Jam had the hardest competition, but the hardest competition as I showed the respect, I also showed the truth. And the truth is everybody else had to sit down so Def Jam could be who they are." Read the rest of the article here.
This week, Alice In Chains (guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell, guitarist/vocalist William DuVall, drummer Sean Kinney, bassist Mike Inez) will release Black Gives Way to Blue. The first Alice in Chains album in nearly fourteen years, Black Gives Way to Blue is their first release with new vocalist William DuVall. The album marks the first Alice in Chains album released on Virgin Records, their first venture away from Columbia, who released all of their previous releases. Give a listen on youtube.
Among the album's many highlights is riff-driven lead single "Check My Brain," currently No. 1 on Billboard's Rock Songs Chart, and its stunning title track, a heart-stirring tribute to Layne Staley, the band's late lead singer. The song features a special guest appearance by Elton John on piano. Nothing gay about that...elton rocks. Check out "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" this week for two consecutive nights on Tuesday and Wednesday.
When the members of Sunny Day Real Estate announced their reunion tour, no one could have predicted that the underground emo-band's gathering would have coincided with the fact that their song 'Seven,' from their 1994 debut release 'Diary,' was going to be included in the new 'Guitar Hero 5.'
"I was surprised," bassist Nate Mendel tells Spinner. "I didn't know that we had passed that threshold into public consciousness. I can't wait to get a copy and play it! It is a really super-fun, ridiculous, funny thing to play one of your own songs in Guitar Hero. I've done it with Foo Fighters [his former band]. I think I was better at Kansas, though, that was where I shined."
Sunny Day frontman Jeremy Enigk shares the same bemused enthusiasm about the experience. "I was absolutely stoked when we were asked to put a song on there as I am a huge video game nerd," he says. "I have played the game and thought it was a blast. I think it will be funny to play my own song and completely suck at it."
To further prove their excitement, the band posted the following video on their Twitter feed. We'd say that avatars' rock posturing is bit different than what you'll see from the decidedly un-flashy band at their reunion shows. (via)
