Local law enforcement deals with sex offenders almost daily, but in the past couple of months, Zanesville police have dealt with one of the youngest cases officers can remember - an 11-year-old girl charged with three counts of rape.
Detective Randy Ritchason said the girl had some type of sexual contact with three other children - two boys and a girl -all under the age of 10. She was charged in Muskingum County Juvenile Court.
"I believe it's the youngest perpetrator we've had," Ritchason said. "We've had young teens before, but she is about the youngest I've ever dealt with."
Rhonda Hinkle, a supervisor with Muskingum County Children's Services, said the girl is a very rare case, but her office is continually seeing more and more children who are committing sex crimes, not just being victims.
"I think a lot of it has to do with society today," Hinkle said. "We have so many blended families today, we have all the technology that children at young ages are allowed access to and we have entirely different sets of values and issues then ever before."
A Japanese science lab is developing technologies to visualise images and dreams - and eventually read people's minds.
Prospective dreamers are asked to look at a photo of what they would like to dream about and then record a story line into the Yumemi Kobo, or "dream workshop". The machine uses the voice recording, along with lights, music and smells, to help them direct their own dreams during periods of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, Takara Co said.
Sleepers are woken up gently after eight hours with music and lights that simulate sunlight so that users of the gadget do not forget their dream in the shock of waking.
Takara Co, which brought the world the "bowlingual" and "meowlingual" devices - which purport to translate your pet's communication - admitted the machine may still need refining.
"We are still experimenting, mainly with company employees," Kenji Hattori, a Takara marketing executive, told reporters on Wednesday.
"Some said the theme was right, but the story-line was wrong. Some said the noise woke them up. But it has worked for quite a number of people." via
Police say a western Pennsylvania mother drugged her 13-year-old daughter so the woman's boyfriend could get the girl pregnant. Uniontown police say 32-year-old Shana Brown is no longer able to have children, but wanted a baby with her boyfriend.
A detective says Brown and her boyfriend attempted to impregnate the girl on three occasions. He says the girl prevented the rapes. The girl's paternal grandmother reported the incidents to police in the town about 50 miles south of Pittsburgh. Brown is facing several charges, including endangering the welfare of children. Brown's attorney didn't immediately return a call for comment.
The boyfriend, 40-year-old Duane Calloway, faces charges of attempted rape. It wasn't immediately clear if he has an attorney.
Middle school students catch drunk teacher on video
Land O' Lakes, Florida -- Video has now surfaced of a Pasco County teacher accused last week of coming to class intoxicated and forcing students to dance in an inappropriate manner.
District administrators say 42-year-old Kylene Nelson remains on administrative leave pending a decision on her future by the Pasco County School Board.
Reports show the teacher had a blood alcohol level of 0.26 and later ran from campus to a nearby community center where she was found passed out by a pool.
A student, who did not want to be identified, told 10 Connects Nelson reeked of alcohol and was making strange faces during first period Language Arts class.
Later, music was turned on and, students say, the teacher began grabbing them and demanding they dance.
"She started saying, 'If you don't dance with me, you guys all fail,'" the student recalled.
At one point, witnesses say Nelson partially exposed her butt while dancing with a 13-year-old boy.
"We told her, 'Miss Nelson, please pull up your pants', and she did, but then they fell down again and she held them there," the 8th grader said, also noting her teacher did not appear to have on underwear.
"She was kinda grinding, like, putting her butt against you," the student said.
A recommendation on how to discipline Nelson will be made during an April 21st school board meeting. The decision on whether or not to terminate her employment will ultimately be left up to the Pasco County School Board.
In a separate incident from October of 2006, reports indicate Nelson failed to show up for a third period class at Seven Spring Middle School. A school resource officer found Nelson passed out in her car surrounded by bottles of wine.
She was ordered to change schools and undergo a substance abuse program, but remained employed with Pasco County Schools.
Students say Nelson was an excellent teacher, but now hope she can get help for her alcohol problem.
A STEM cell therapy offering “natural” breast enlargement is to be made available to British women for the first time.
The treatment could boost cup size while reducing stomach fat. It involves extracting stem cells from spare fat on the stomach or thighs and growing them in a woman’s breasts. An increase of one cup size is likely, with the potential for larger gains as the technique improves.
A trial has already started in Britain to use stem cells to repair the breasts of women who have had cancerous lumps removed. A separate project is understood to be the first in Britain to use the new technique on healthy women seeking breast enlargement.
Professor Kefah Mokbel, a consultant breast surgeon at the London Breast Institute at the Princess Grace hospital, who is in charge of the project, will treat 10 patients from May. He predicts private patients will be able to pay for the procedure within six months at a cost of about £6,500.
